Car pollution control in Chiang Mai
THE Pollution Control Department (PCD)’s office in the northern Thai province of Chiang Mai is taking serious action against owners of cars that release higher levels of black exhaust fumes than allowed by the law, the Thai-language Daily News reported today (May 10, 2018).
Chiang Mai residents are already suffering from smoke caused by slash-and-burn agriculture, and pollution caused by poorly-maintained cars has added to the problem, said PCD director-general Sunee Phanphong.
During the past week, PCD officials have random-checked 363 cars in the city and 46 of them were found to have released higher levels of carbon monoxide than allowed by the law. The 46 car owners were fined 500 baht each and barred from driving their vehicles until they have their cars checked by licensed inspectors.
