Illegal mosquito repellant smuggled from China seized

IN A raid on a warehouse in Samut Prakan today (Jan. 19 ) Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) police seized a large quantity of illegal mosquito repellant smuggled into the country from China with these brands containing hazardous substances, TV Channel 7 said.

Police seized 380 boxes of the illegal mosquito repellant and arrested Mr. Thatchai (surname withheld), 32, who said he was the caretaker of this warehouse on the charges of helping hide, sell or receive goods that have not passed through customs procedures.

This raid was mounted after police were tipped off that products smuggled from abroad were stored and sold from this warehouse.

In 2022 the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued an announcement warning the public to only buy mosquito repellants with Thai labels and product numbers because it had found that many brands imported from abroad contained Pyrethroids, Meperfluthrin and Dimefluthrin which are toxic to humans and animals.

If inhaled in large quantities, these chemicals can cause dizziness, headache, vomiting, muscle twitching, fatigue, convulsions and unconsciousness

Such products have to get permission to import, manufacture and distribute in order to evaluate their safety and effectiveness.
