Armed robbers steal 1.7m baht from rubber trader

TWO robbers armed with an M16 rifle and a pistol walked into a rubber purchasing yard in Leoi early this morning (Dec. 15) and stole 1.7 million baht from the owner and fled into a forest bordering Laos, Naewna newspaper said.

Pol. Lt. Col. Thawatchai Chittrithat, deputy chief of the Na Haeo police station, Na Haeo district, was alerted of the robbery by the village headman of Muang Phrae and quickly went there to investigate.

At the scene, Ms. Anya Ocharas, 45, the owner of this yard, related that at approximately 8.40 a.m. two men wearing balaclavas walked into the rear of the yard which is next to a forest just as she was sitting and buying rubber cup lumps.

They fired one or two shots into the sky but she did not realise it was gunshots thinking it was firewood workers had lit to keep warm crackling.

But the person who came to sell the rubber cup lumps saw them just as she was counting the money to pay him.

One of the robbers, armed with what appeared to be an M16 rifle, stood guard in the yard while the other walked up and pointed his pistol at her while telling everyone in the yard to lie down.

He then grabbed her handbag, which had about 1.7 million baht in it, and the two of them then fled to the forest bordering Laos.

Anya said it appears the robbers planned the hit well as she does not come to the yard everyday. She has a house in this province and only comes to the yard on certain days to buy rubber cup lumps and wondered how they knew she would be coming there today.
