Satun gears up for influx of tourists during Vegetarian Festival

WITH the Vegetarian Festival this year starting tomorrow (Oct. 3) and running till the following Friday (Oct. 11) among the provinces getting ready for an influx of tourists is southernmost Satun, TV Channel 7 said today.

Every year large numbers of tourists, especially Malaysians, travel to join this traditional event during which those observing it abstain from types of meat, including vegetables with strong smells, and foods containing eggs and milk.

This being the case they will be mainly consuming vegetables leading to a spike in their prices.

At Satun municipality market prices of various vegetables have already increased with most vendors saying the spike started higher up in the chain.

As Satun too was flooded this year and this coincided with this festival when demand for vegetables soars, prices are now much higher. For example morning glory, previously sold at 30 baht a kg now costs 50 baht a kg. Price of cabbage too has gone up from 40 to 50 baht a kg.

Prices of chillies, Chinese kale, and cucumbers likewise have all increased by 10 to 20 baht a kg and another jump is expected two to three days into the festival.
