Thai crickets set for export to EU and Mexico
Crickets are a new source of protein for people in several countries, and Thailand is looking for new markets to export them.
“The insects are in high demand here and in many other countries. They can create jobs for farmers now facing the COVID-19 crisis,” said Miss Ju-adee Pongmaneerat of the National Agriculture and Food Standard.
“We are targeting the EU and Mexico as our new markets for this kind of food,” she said in an interview with the Thai-language daily Thai Rath yesterday (Aug 28, 2020).
The Livestock Department is responsible for certifying the standards of all cricket farms, which can now harvest more than 7,000 tons of crickets per year worth about 1,000 million baht.
