Thai fisherman killed 30 dolphins to make Dolphin Jerky.
Police Lieutenant General Jaruwat Wasaya from the Royal Thai Police reported in relation to solving Illegal, unreported and unregulated fishing (IUU) from the Marine of Fisheries, and the Command Center for combating Illegal Fishing (CCCIF) touching on the video clip showing 30 dolphins caught in a fishing trawl in the Malaysian waters killing many dolphins in the process.
The Prime Minister ordered an immediate investigation leading to the discovery that the boat in the video used to be a vessel named “S.Pornthepnawee 9” a Thai boat that was sold to a Malaysian buyer 2 years ago. The boat has been transferred into the Malaysian waters and had its name changed to “KNF 7779”. Although it is not a Thai boat anymore, there were 2 Thai fishermen on the boat at the time that the video was recorded.
Tananchai Mingmit 56 years old and Santi Buaput 49 years old are the 2 Thai Citizens working as a head fisherman and head fisherman helper. Both men have warrants issued out in their name. According to the Royal Ordinance on Fisheries B.E. 2558 Section 66 that prohibits the fishing of marine mammals or endangered marine animals. Section 145 states that punishment is no less than 300,000 THB and not exceeding 3,000,000 Million THB. International Law in relation to the issue will also be taken into consideration in the prosecution process.
Tananchai and Santi admitted to working on the boat and they were the ones who gave orders to bring all 30 dolphins up onto the boat. After the dolphins were pulled up, 4 were made into dolphin jerky and the rest were thrown back into the ocean. It is unclear how many were dead when they were thrown back into the ocean. If the men have no money to pay the charges then they will be imprisoned for no more than 2 years.
