Thailand and Australia exchange drug samples for research
Niyom Termsisuk from the Office of the Narcotics Control Board in the Ministry of Justice (ONCB) and Stephen Fry with related officials from the Australian Federal Police (AFP) exchanged dug samples from each nation for the purpose of research. The drugs have been gathered from the evidence found in large cases from 2016 to 2018 in each nation. 40 drug samples were exchanged including 20 samples of Crystal Meth, 1 gram per sample coming to a total of 20 grams and 20 samples of Yaba pills, 20 pills per sample coming to a total of 400 Yaba pills altogether.
Officials from the AFP traveled to Thailand and picked up the drug samples collected from the evidence of big drug cases in Thailand throughout the last 3 years. The exchange of drug samples is a part of the International Cooperation between Thailand and Australia. The mission intended for the exchange is to study the difference in the drugs, the origin of the drugs, how the drug is made. The drugs are researched to investigate leading to an establishment of how the drugs were smuggled and to establish the connection between each big drug case in both Thailand and Australia.
Hopefully, the exchange and research will help the officials to find new information on international drug smuggling groups, including finding more information on the international drug gangs behind specific types of drugs. This is the 2nd exchange of drug samples between Australia and Thailand, the first exchange took place last year where 20 samples of crystal meth collected from cases in Thailand from 2014 to 2017 were given to the Australian Authorities to study.
It has been discovered that the crystal meth sold in Australia has a similar chemical precursor to the crystal meth found in Thailand. Officials estimate that they are so similar it is probably made and smuggled by the same group of people with similar techniques used to carry out the operations. The exchange is to improve the efficiency in the study of drugs, to learn more about the drugs on the market, and to help create a drug profile for narcotics discovered, including those in the future released into the market by drug dealers.
