Lumpini police deny demanding money from Syrian
METROPOLITAN Police chief confirmed today (August 22) that Lumpini Police Station did not demand 600,000 baht from an overstaying Syrian national who has made this accusation in a complaint filed at the Justice Ministry, INN News said.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Sanit Mahathavorn said a Syrian working in Thailand went to the Justice Ministry yesterday afternoon and told them a group of foreigners, who claim to be police volunteers, demanded 600,000 baht from him in return for not pursuing a case against him for overstaying in Thailand.
Pol. Lt. Gen. Sanit said the head of Lumpini Police Station told him the policemen at his station were not linked to this demand for money with this including police volunteers, who are translators, as they did not display any suspicious behavior.
The Lumpini Police Station head added that he arrested the Syrian for overstaying in this country and sent him to court in accordance with the procedure.
The court ordered that he be jailed for two months and fined 3,000 baht but the two-month term was commuted to one year probation.
After the Syrian paid his fine he was sent to the Immigration Bureau as per the procedure with no demand for money made, he said.
