‘Buy Pineapple’ campaign in Chiang Mai

IF you are in the northern Thai province of Chiang Mai, chances are you will be asked by local people and merchants to eat pineapple, the Thai-language Daily News reported today (June 30).

This year’s big surplus of pineapple harvest has driven down the price to just 2 baht per kilogram. “We now have 50 tons of pineapple to be sold,” said Mr Sumit Atiporntep, who is leading a campaign to help the pineapple farmers.

Mr Sumit said local people and organizations have stepped in by buying the surplus pineapple and sending them to schools around the province. “I am sure everyone will having pineapple for desserts for a long time.”
