Exploring Phuket’s surroundings – Koh Phi Phi

KOH Phi Phi is most certainly one of the most popular destinations in Thailand and its proximity to Phuket makes it for an ideal day trip out of the island. While everyone has heard of Koh Phi Phi at some stage in their lives, not everyone is familiar with the fact that it is part of two islands, Koh Phi Phi Leh, the smaller one, and Koh Phi Phi Don, the larger island.

A day trip out of Phuket can be organized through the pier of Chalong and Phuket Town and it will take about 1 hour and 30 minutes by boat to reach them. Boats will usually stop at Koh Phi Phi Leh first to let you appreciate the scenery of this uninhabited island, perfect for snorkeling and trekking. If you are familiar with the movie The Beach, featuring Leonardo di Caprio, you will surely recognize some scenes of the movie as it was shot at Maya Bay, where the boats will drop you off.

Unfortunately, you won’t feel stranded on the sand as hundreds and hundreds of tourists visit each day, leaving only a few spots to take a selfie on your own.

The next stop is Koh Phi Phi Don, where you can spend some well-deserved time on the beach and enjoy a local lunch at the main restaurant on the pier. On this island, you will find hotels, restaurants, bars and a local lifestyle as it counts approximately 3,000 inhabitants. A good tip is to actually book a resort for a few nights, so that you can enjoy the islands early in the morning, when the mass tourists haven’t had time to reach the shore. If you’re a party-goers, this is an opportunity not to be missed!

The sun is back and shines on the Andaman Sea, so grab yourself a ticket to the islands and explore the beautiful marine species that populate the region. Please refrain from touching corals and do not feed the fish; if you get caught, you will have to pay a severe fine, despite what the guides might have told you.
