Strict burning ban starts in Chiang Mai
A BAN on all kinds of burning for 51 days kicked off in Chiang Mai today (March 1) where the particulate matter (PM) reached 87-110 micrograms in the city and and 113 in Mae Chaem district, the Thai-language daily Matichon reported.
Chiang Mai Governor Pawin Chamniprasarn said burning is strictly forbidden during these 51 days from March 1, 2018 till April 20, 2018. Those who start fires in forests, reserved forests and communities with over 25 rai of land razed face a fine of 200,000 up to 2 million baht and from 4 to 20 years in jail.
Informers will get a reward of 5,000 baht and they may call 0-5311-2236 or 191 all 24 hours.
Meanwhile Mr Somkid Panyadi, director of Environmental Division, Chiang Mai Natural Resources and Environment Office, said the hotspots are areas where there are lots of orchards, mainly Chom Thong, Mae Chaem, Hot, Omkoi and Doi Tao districts. Districts at risk of forest fires are Mae Chaem and San Pa Tong.
This year Chiang Mai has set a target to reduce hotspots from 904 last year to 228, usually there are over 5,000 of them.
