PM Prayut floats idea of car pollution tax
PRIME Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha hinted at slapping motorists with a pollution tax to help tackle smog hanging over Bangkok and other Thai cities, Thai News Agency reported today (March 14).
General Prayut said particulate matter has risen in Bangkok and other cities around the country because of fluctuating weather, with this leading to overcast sky and clouds hanging low, and this in turn trapping the dust rising from the earth which cannot dissipate.
“Part of the smog comes from car exhaust. In the past motorists have only been paying a tax for their vehicles, but in future I think they should pay a pollution excise tax too, so as to use the money to compensate for resolving pollution problem,” Prime Minister Prayut said.
