10 wild elephants destroyed villagers Durian farm in Chanthaburi
Wild elephants destroyed villagers durian farm in Chanthaburi province causing over 200,000 to 300,000 THB of damages. The elephants chose to enter the farm in durian season when most of the durians will be ready to sell in a few weeks. Villagers from Thamai district, Chanthaburi province notified Workpoint News of what had happened to local farmers.
The owner of the durian farm is Thanom Lampungwong 65 years old and Piyarat Lampungwong 61 years old. Thanom the husband reported that the wild elephants entered his farm during the night of the 27th of this month. At the time he and his family were sleeping in the house when at least 10 elephants came in and totally trashed the durian farm.
The elephants headed towards their home and began destroying parts of the house. They then walked towards the durian farm where they stepped on the tree’s and ate parts of the durian fruits. Around 4 am of the 28th the elephants decided to head back to where they came from on the mountain near the village.
Thanom and Piyarat went to inspect the durian farm when the sun came up and discovered that 15 durian trees were totally destroyed and 15 durian trees had broken branches. The elephants used their trunks to pull down most of the durian to eat or smash on the ground with their feet. Thanom estimates that at least 200,000 to 300,000 THB of damages were caused by the wild elephants to his durian farm.
The durian was supposed to be harvested and sold on the 10th of April which is next month. The family will report the incident to the district for further inspection by the authorities in the area. Thanom stated that the elephants were probably hungry so they decided to come down from the mountain for food.
