40 pieces of wood removed from nose in Nakhon Si Thammarat
This incident took place on the 16th of this month at Sichon hospital in Nakhon Si Thammarat when a patient walked into the hospital with problems in his breathing. The man stated that he always had bad breath and could smell it all the time. At first, the man would not let the doctor check inside his nose, but he finally gave in and had a nose examination.
The patient stated that he had extremely bad breath no matter if he breathed through his mouth or through his nose, it was bothering the people around him and also himself as he could always notice the bad smell in his daily life. When the doctor examined the inside of his nose, the doctor could see small pieces of wood stuck inside. A total of over 40 pieces of wood were removed from his nostrils.
The patient’s nose has been infected for years without him realizing the true cause because the patient wouldn’t come to see the doctor until this point in time. Each piece of wood was hidden from the opening of his nose and deep into his nostrils. Arak Wongworachat, MD, the Principle of the hospital reported that he hopes that this case will be a good study case as cases like this are rare, especially in Thailand.
Doctor Arak reported that cases like this are very rare, normally it will occur in young children who are innocent and don’t realize the danger of hard objects in the nose. Looking into the patient’s history, there have been records of past mental illnesses. Because of the severe infection, the male patient still risks having the infection spreading to his brain.
After the procedure, the patient has returned home for further recovery. Lastly, Doctor Arak stated that the patient’s information is confidential, but he wishes that this is a good example for other families to be aware of, cases of infection can be extremely dangerous if left untreated.
