DSI searches 41 crypto mining farms using public electricity.

The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) along with related officials has searched 41 crypto mining farms in Nonthaburi Province and Bangkok. These farms have been illegally using public electricity. These farms use about 500,000 THB worth of electricity every month but pay a bill of only 300 THB. Because of this, the government has lost over 500 million THB annually. Police Lieutenant Colonel Chalermsak Unhaseri and related officials opened a special investigation named “Electrical Shock” on 30 November 2022.

As part of the investigation officials searched 41 crypto mining farms and over 2,000 mining machines were found and seized worth over 400 million THB. The DSI in cooperation with the Metropolitan Electrical Authority, the Provincial Electrical Authority, and the Thai Customs Department worked together in finding and searching these locations. Investigation revealed many suspicious locations across Nonthaburi and Bangkok. Officials suspected that these locations were illegally using public electricity. Crypto mining uses an extreme amount of electricity and is comparable to large factories. These farms have connected directly to an electrical source without passing through an electrical meter.

These farms are stealing government resources. Investigation has also shown that there are investors connected to these farms. They would help find buildings to make into crypto mining farms. The buildings are rented with an average of 100 mining machines per building. Each farm uses about 500,000 THB worth of electricity a month but has an electricity bill of only 300-2,000 THB per month. This means the government has been losing about 20 million THB per month from the 41 crypto mining farms. The investigation will continue as information shows there are more locations suspected to be crypto mining farms using public electricity.
