Babu mafia members arrested for selling counterfeit sneakers in MBK.
Members of a mafia gang known as “Babu” have been arrested relating to selling counterfeit sneakers in MBK mall. Police received information about a mafia gang with Indian members named Babu gang. The gang gets its income from selling counterfeit goods including brand-name bags, sneakers, clothing, and watches. The goods are sold in MBK mall and other locations in Bangkok. Victims are both locals and foreigners who believe they are buying authentic items at an excellent price.
Investigation revealed the gang supplies products to over 30 stores around the Pathumwan area. Police General Tosak Sukwimon the Deputy Commissioner-General gave orders to related officials to search a rented unit in MBK mall with a search warrant from the Central Intellectual Property and International Trade Court. Police found a large stock of counterfeit sneakers with 2 foreign gang members keeping watch of the product. Both American and European sneaker brands were found, a total of 591 pairs. There were orders being filled for stores nearby.
A member of Babu admitted that the sneakers were being sold to foreigners thinking its the real deal. The sneakers are sold for 2,000-8,000 THB depending on the model. The sneakers found are worth 5 Million THB. Officials do not know what the damages stand for buyers that were made to believe they were purchasing authentic items. The 2 Babu members were arrested for charges related to selling counterfeit items. They have been delivered to the police along with evidence of the fake goods. The investigation will continue to find the remaining members of Babu.
