Bangkok ready to clean up Chao Phraya River after Loy Krathong
Bangkok is prepared to clean up all the Krathongs after the festive Thai celebration “Loy Krathong” that takes place this Monday (11 November 2019). Silpsuay Ravisaengsun the Deputy Governor of Bangkok reported that the Environment Department has prepared enough city workers to clean up the Chao Phraya River after the festive night of Loy Krathong 2019.
The cleaning will begin from under the Rama 7 Bridge to Wat Yothin Pradit Temple in Bangna, a cleaning area that covers 34 kilometers. The river cleaning will be divided into 3 main zones, 1. Rama 7 Bridge to Saphan Phut (Memorial Bridge), 2. Saphan Phut to Saphan Krungthep Bridge, and 3. Saphan Krungthep to Bangna.
There are 203 city workers who will be working to clean up the river. Over 40 boats will be involved in the cleanup and 14 garbage trucks that will be working in rotation to deliver the Krathongs to the Waste Station. The clean up starts on the date of the festival at 20.00 with a mission set for the clean up to be done before 6 am on the 12.
The Krathongs will be taken apart and separated into different types of waste. This is when a total number of Krathongs will be counted to keep as statistics for this year’s celebration compared to last year’s celebration. Krathongs made from natural banana leaves and flowers can be recycled into natural fertilizers at the Nong Khaem District fertilizer factory while Krathongs made from the foam will be buried under the ground.
In 2018, Bangkok cleaned up 841,327 Krathongs. Out of the number, 94.7% of Krathongs were made from natural materials at an exact number of 796,444 Krathongs. 5.3% were Krathongs made from foam at an exact number of 44,883 Krathongs. The number of total Krathongs increased from 2017 by 3.62% with an exact number of 841,327 Krathongs in 2018 and 811,945 Krathongs in 2017. There was a growth in the use of natural Krathongs wherein 2017 the percentage was 93.6% and the use of foam Krathongs was at 6.4%. Hopefully, there will be fewer Krathongs this year and an increase in the use of natural Krathongs compared to foam Krathongs.
