Time to support Thailand Pavillion: new opportunities in World Expo 2020 Dubai

In a few months, many countries will get to know Thailand even better through Thailand Pavilion in World Expo 2020 Dubai, to be hosted by the United Arab Emirates from October 1, 2021 – March 31, 2022. However, the outbreak of the coronavirus since 2019, aka COVID-19 pandemic, has caused the Digital Economy Promotion Agency (depa), an agency supervised by the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, a colossal budget crunch as the delegated operator.

“Nattapon Nimmanphatcharin,” depa’s President and CEO, said that it was very honored for a small agency like depa to be recognized by the cabinet and to be in charge of a global event like the World Expo, yet it is also a huge challenge for us especially when the Thailand Pavilion has been among World Expo’s top-ranked pavilion for decades.

The tight allocated budget has become the first challenge. The second, with a huge impact, was when the outbreak of COVID-19 delayed the event from the original schedule. The 1-year postponement came with additional costs of over 12 million baht on structural maintenance and security equipment, building and system inspections, cleaning services, warehouse rental for equipment and showcases, utilities, as well as public health measures required by the host country.

“We are well aware of the country’s priority based on current situation. Still, we remain determined for the Thailand Pavilion to deliver the best, to show the world our potentials, with support and partnership from private sectors, and together we seek for business opportunity and foreign investment.” said the President and CEO of depa.
