Gen. Prawit skips meeting as watch uproar grows
DEPUTY Prime Minister and Defense Minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan this morning (Dec. 7) missed a key meeting at the Government House leading to the media speculating that it was because he did not want to answer questions about his watch, INN News reported.
Gen. Prawit instead asked Gen. Surasak Kanjanarat, the natural resources and environment minister, to replace him in presiding over the National Policy on Minerals Management Committee meeting.
Gen. Prawit sent word that he was too busy to attend this meeting, but Thai media speculated that he both wanted to avoid answering reporters’ questions about his watch and diamond ring, and also had to arrange his papers to explain to the National Anti-Corruption Commission about these two luxury items, which are not on his list of assets.
Political activist Srisuwan Janya is going to hand in a letter to the commission today to check the watch and diamond ring he was seen wearing when Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his new cabinet posed for a photo at the Government House lawn on Monday.
Reporters also noticed that no advance parties of Gen. Prawit, Gen. Anupong Paochinda the interior minister, Gen General Theppong Tippayachan, the defense permanent secretary, and Krisada Boonrat, the agriculture and cooperatives minister, had turned up at the Government.
They are now waiting to see whether Gen. Prawit will come to preside over of a Police Commission meeting this afternoon.
