Appeals Court upholds death sentence for Spaniard
THE Appeals Court today (July 13, 2018) upheld a death sentence against a Spanish man on the charges of murdering a fellow countryman in Bangkok in January 2016 and dumping his body in the Chao Phraya river, Thai News Agency reported.
Corrections officers brought Mr Artur Segarra Princep from Bang Kwang prison to hear the verdict at the Appeals court.
The Court of First Instance had found the defendant guilty of killing David Bernat during Jan 20-26, 2016 at PG condominium in Rama 9 area, then dismembering this body and throwing the body parts into the Chao Phraya river after taking 734,940 baht belonging to the deceased.
The Court of First Instance had also ordered the defendant to pay compensation to the deceased man’s family.
The defendant has denied the charges throughout.
The Appeals Court said it believed that the defendant planned to killed the deceased and steal his money after forcefully keeping him at his condominium and using force to get the password to his electronic bank account. Upon getting the money, the defendant killed and dismembered his body.
Meanwhile Agencia EFE said Segarra told them he would challenge the ruling at the Supreme Court.
The main defense for Segarra was that he denied all charges against him, his lawyer told EFE.
In a letter to EFE, Segarra had earlier maintained he was not guilty, and that he was a victim of a plan hatched by his Thai ex-girlfriend Pritsana Saen-ubon – who had testified against him – in connivance with the police.
