Govt urged to tackle intrusion of sea water
Nakhon Sawan MP Veerakorn Kamprakop this morning (3 Feb 2021) urged the government to urgently take action to prevent seawater from flowing into inland rivers.
According to the Thai-language daily Matichon, the government is already bracing for seawater intrusion into four major rivers, including the Chao Phraya, as low freshwater levels will affect farmers, rice planting and tap water production.
Mr. Veerakorn suggested that the government build foldable water gates to regulate the flow of freshwater into inland rivers.
Right now, farmers and household residents need more than 4,000 million cubic meters of water a year. In the next 20 years, the Thai population will need 8,000 million cubic meters of water a year.
