Elderly man held for drug trafficking

A 60-year-old man was arrested in the northern Thai border town of Mae Sai last night and charged with drug trafficking, Chiang Mai News reported today (March 16).

Acting on a tip-off, narcotics suppression policemen set up a checkpoint on the outskirts of the tourist city in Chiang Rai province. Around 7.30 p.m. they stopped a motorcycle driven by an elderly man, who stuttered as they asked him where he was heading.

The police found ten plastic bags hidden under a big sack of dried tea leaves he was carrying. Each bag contained one kilogram of Ice (crystal methamphetamine).

The suspect said he picked up the drugs from a Myanmar man at the border and was to hand them over to another person at an abandoned townhouse.
