Backpack with 13M THB Gold in Chiang Mai Airport.
A mysterious backpack was found laying in the Chiang Mai International Airport on the 5th of this month (August 2019) at 8.30 am. A passenger from NokAir Airlines flight DD 830 traveling from Chiang Mai to Don Muang Airport in Bangkok had forgotten a Black Backpack at the security check counter 1 at the airport.
The security officer working at the counter during that time period was Sudthida Sittichockchaiwut and Nonthakorn Sidang from the security company M.A.I. The security officers waited for a long time, but the owner still didn’t come to pick up the backpack.
They followed the guidelines for lost and found items by notifying the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team (EOD). After the EOD team made sure that the backpack was safe, it was X-rayed to confirm what the items inside were before reporting the great find to the commander at the airport.
The Local Police, Immigration Police, Customs, NokAir representative, and other related officials were called in as witnesses to watch the backpack get opened. Inside the backpack was similar to a treasure chest seen on TV. There were 24 small ziplock bags filled with gold, to be exact 10,304.49 grams of gold estimated to be worth 13 Million THB. It is a wonder how one can forget such a precious backpack. Because it was a domestic flight this does not break any customs law.
Then finally at 1 pm, the owner aged 35 years old returned to the Chiang Mai Airport. The CCTV footage shows that it is the same person who was carrying the backpack into the security counter. The items inside the backpack are extremely high valued so the owner was sent to the local police for verification of ownership.
There weren’t any issues in the process and the owner returned home safely. The owner had asked the officials to keep her real name and address confidential for her safety. As for the reason on how she forgot the backpack, the owner stated she was in a hurry to catch her flight.
